Our annual Art Competition took place on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at our 3rd Street facility with an excellent turnout of over 100 friends, family, and East LA community members. Guests were invited to LAMusArt’s lobby and courtyard for refreshments, and an exciting evening of friendly competition, featuring artwork from LAMusArt students ages 5-18. The evening began with a viewing of the displayed artwork, followed by an introduction of the program by our Program Coordinator, Hugo Rios. Rios introduced our art instructors, Erick Altamirano and Zeina Baltagi, both of whom have been members of the LAMusArt family for several years.
After mingling and observing the student pieces, Altamirano and Baltagi welcomed guests and introduced the esteemed judges, contemporary artists Gary Brewer and Regina Harod. Upon careful consideration, our judges chose three winners per group, resulting in 9 trophy winners. In the Primary Elementary group, Abigail Pasillas took home first prize for her painting entitled, “The Stork,” while runner-up Jose Gonzalez accepted second place for his work, “Futbol”. Third place went to Ilen OCampo’s “Angel In The Sky.” The Primary Elementary group was judged on clarity of representation of subject and color application.
The second group, Middle School (ages 10-13), was judged on level of detailed representation of subject and color application. Aidan Dominguez’s “Lonely Giraffe” won first place, followed by Natalie Garcia’s “Journey,” and Leonard Miranda’s “Natsu.”
The final group, High School, consisted of students ages 14-18. Their criteria included detailed representation of subject, and mastery of their medium. Alejandro Ortega’s “Evergreen” took third place, and Diego Fragoso’s “Mountains By The Sea” won second. Perhaps the biggest win of the night went to “Satelles” by Alejandro Miranda, who in addition to his first place trophy won a six month art scholarship for his masterful work. Congratulations Alejandro!
The Art Competition culminated in a spirited celebration of the winners and a brief reception with the judges and parents. “It’s always nice to show the parents what we do here, and to showcase the hard work of the students,” said Rios.We are always thrilled as an organization to host such a joyful event that allows students to feel proud of themselves and parents to feel proud of their students.
Students who are interested in developing their visual art skills through weekly courses are welcomed to join our visual art program, which offers small group classes beginning at age 5. Please feel free to call 323.262.7734 for more info on visual arts education at LAMusArt.
