Camp MusArt attends Mary Poppins

On Thursday, July 13, 2017, Camp MusArt students, teachers, and staff attended a special performance of Musical Theatre West’s production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach.

Camp MusArt students arrived in true Hollywood fashion, donned in their best attire for the performance. Each summer, Camp MusArt student participants attend a musical or theatrical event ahead of their own performance so that they can see how the different elements they have been learning in the classroom come together to produce a spectacular show.

The field trip also serves to expose students to different venues and performances that are accessible in their own communities so that even after their experience with Camp MusArt, they and their families can continue to engage in the arts.

While many of our students were familiar with Disney’s 1964 movie Mary Poppins, on which this show is based on, for many of our students, this was the first time they had ever attended a live production of the show. Our students were treated to many memorable songs, dance numbers, and touches of stage magic.

Following the performance, our students had the unique opportunity to greet the actors, ask for their autographs, take pictures, and discuss their impressions of the show.

Soon it will be our students’ turn to take the stage for their production of Disney’s The Lion King Jr. For the past five weeks, our students have been busy rehearsing and preparing for their stage debut at the East Los Angeles College Performing Arts Center.
