LAMusArt Expands Courses to Encourage Adult and Family Participation in East Los Angeles

East Los Angeles’ cornerstone for youth arts education, the Los Angeles Music and Art School (LAMusArt) expands its courses to adults with a new Zumba fitness and dance class taught by 7-year certified instructor and Ariel Improta.  Classes are held on their newly upgraded campus every Saturday at 2pm for parents and community members to experience high-energy dance in a new way.

For 74 years LAMusArt has been the mainstay for generations of East Angeleno families to send their children for music, art, dance and drama lessons.  Now, LAMusArt with its updated and lively campus encourages adults to enjoy the benefits of dance for a low, subsidized class rate.  They are waiving the registration fee and adults can lock in a low tuition of $10.00 per class if they enroll by calling the school.

In 2018, LAMusArt conducted over $175,000 worth of repairs over the course of four consecutive years to gradually improve the function and safety of areas.  New flooring, paint, and windows in 18 classrooms and their 2 adjoining large dance rooms and 2 multi-stall restrooms allow students – both children and adults – to feel safe and welcome in their space.  The Zumba classroom boasts new hardwood dance floors, full length mirrors, an upright piano, and a bar for ballet or barre warm-ups.

Manuel Prieto, the young visionary Executive Director of LAMusArt planned to increase participation and collaborate with community members when he was selected to lead the nonprofit in 2015.  “East Los Angeles is filled with so much life! It’s our duty to create arts experiences for not just youth but to the entire community so all can benefit from our diverse programs.” So “join the party” and take Zumba with Ariel Improta who makes every class a memorable dance party.

Opportunities such as these and many other are supported thanks to the contributions of the Colburn Foundation, California Arts Council, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, LAMusArt’s Young Professionals Advisory Board (YPAB), revenue from concerts, and our individual donors.

Registration for LAMusArt’s ZUMBA CLASS is open.
