LAMusArt’s Annual Stars for the Arts Benefit Brings Original Cinema Front and Center

On Sunday, September 17th, the Los Angeles Music and Art School held its annual benefit, Stars for the Arts, at Seventh/Place just a few miles from campus. At this event, supporters, family, and friends of the school gathered for a wonderful evening of philanthropy and original cinema in celebration of the organization’s successful year.

The event began with a cocktail reception and silent auction that included big ticket items such as a 3 day stay at a Mexican villa, signed scripts from the stars of Will & Grace (courtesy of the Writers Guild Foundation), autographed Jackass memorabilia and much more!

As the Silent Auction drew to a close, attendees settled into their seats for dinner, with Executive Director Tahnee Freda delivering opening remarks. She introduced four films created by LAMusArt drama students. The evening kicked off with “Dolores + Glen,” a captivating rom-com centered on young love and the emotions surrounding a crush, written and performed by Delilah Torres. Following the screening, a live auction ensued, transforming the venue into a vibrant gathering filled with cheers and unwavering support for comprehensive, hands-on education.

Guiding this spirited auction was the accomplished auctioneer Journey Werner, who led generous donors in bidding on enticing prizes such as Opening Day Dodgers tickets, an exclusive private wine tasting class, and an unforgettable week-long European river cruise courtesy of Uniworld. After the exhilarating bidding concluded, attendees were treated to a revealing glimpse "Behind the Scenes" of the filmmaking process. This showcase illuminated the dreams of the young participants, their deep admiration for their teacher, and their unwavering passion for the arts.

Following the heartfelt remarks from the film students, Journey Werner introduced the centerpiece of the evening's philanthropic efforts: the Paddle Raise! The generosity of the attendees was on full display as Paddles soared into the air amid spirited cheers!

After the screening of "Peanut," a captivating thriller by Mia Camila exploring the themes of friendship and betrayal, Tahnee introduced the honorees of the evening - the Writers Guild Foundation - who received the Creative Paths in Arts Leadership Award for their dedication to providing artistic pathways to LA communities. In 2021, the Foundation connected LAMusArt Playmaking students with writers and show runners who spoke with them about story elements and shepherded LAMusArt students in using their unique voices to create their own stories. LAMusArt honored the Foundation for forging creative outlets for students, professionals and communities through their dynamic initiatives, meaningfully connecting individuals with educational resources.

Following this prestigious honor, attendees were treated to "The Starring Role," a compelling story of friendship set within the film industry. This narrative, penned by Mia Perez, Alison Moreno, and Auderey Castaneda, continued to captivate and inspire all in attendance.

Cynthia Pearson, President of the LAMusArt Board of Directors, then shared a few poignant words about LAMusArt, its educational philosophy, and the mission it aspires to accomplish with its talented young artists. Expressing heartfelt gratitude to the attendees and sponsors, Ms. Freda subsequently took the stage to present LAMusArt's inaugural Teaching Artist Award to the esteemed Drama Instructor, Evan Enderle. Evan’s joy was palpable as he introduced the final film of the evening, "The Swan," written by Seneka Salazar. This cerebral piece, centered on finding confidence in the face of adversity, concluded to thunderous applause.

The evening was filled with touching films, profound acknowledgments, and unwavering support for the arts.
