Matilda Jr. Takes Over the Courtyard Stage!

After five weeks of musical discovery, artistry, and camaraderie, Camp MusArt reached its pinnacle with the final performances of Matilda The Musical Jr. on LAMusArt’s Courtyard Stage. All three shows were sold out, with audiences made up of family, friends, and staff. The audience was transported to Crunchem Hall Primary School, witnessing the misadventures orchestrated by Agatha Trunchbull and experiencing unforgettable numbers like "The Hammer" and "When I Grow Up."

Thirty-four of our talented students delivered a commanding performance that left the audience in awe. Throughout the immersive Camp MusArt program, these young artists rotated through Drama, Dance, Art, and Music classes, gaining a well-rounded understanding of the disciplines necessary for the production. From audition week to the final performance, the students poured their hearts into their roles, embodying their characters and demonstrating remarkable growth in their craft.

As show week approached, anticipation buzzed throughout the camp. Veteran performers supported newcomers, creating a nurturing environment that fostered improvement and camaraderie. With leads Aries Sunpanich as Matilda and Raymah Carlos as Agatha Trunchbull, the ensemble's synergy brought Matilda Jr. vividly to life on stage.

At LAMusArt, we are honored to host Camp MusArt, a cherished and longstanding program that offers affordable summer arts enrichment. The camp was more than just the final performances; it was a journey of creative fulfillment, artistic discovery, and lasting friendships. The pride and sense of accomplishment at the final curtain were palpable.

Camp MusArt was guided by a dedicated team: Will Domke directed and instructed Drama, Sierra Priest led choreography and taught Dance, Phoebe Silva directed music and led music lessons, and Ruth Ferguson managed prop and scenic design while executing visual arts instruction. Camp MusArt was coordinated by LAMusArt alum, Adriana Ortega, and assisted by LACDAC Intern, Sandro Marrero. Nadia Aponte designed lights and sound, and Marlene Grajeda managed Front of House. Their combined efforts made Camp MusArt 2024 truly unforgettable.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the parents and guardians for their unwavering support, Adriana Ortega & Sandro Marrero for their dedication and invaluable support, and the Ortega and Patacsil family for their generous prop contributions and production help. We look forward to seeing you all again next year. And always remember, “Nobody but me is going to change my story.”
