Best thing about LAMusArt: Music!
Julia Zayas, a seventh grader at KIPP LA Prep, is a triple threat and an LAMusArt veteran. She began her studies with the school as a piano student at six years old and hasn’t stopped learning since. At age seven, Julia started attending Camp MusArt, and has garnered significant roles in the summer’s musical productions over the years, including Lord Farquaad in Shrek and Zazu in LAMusArt’s most recent Camp MusArt production, The Lion King.
Julia really thrived as a camper, partly because auditions were a walk in the park for her. “Auditions are my favorite part of Camp because it’s the only day you can be a lot of different characters,” says Zayas. When asked if she had any advice for her two younger siblings (also LAMusArt students), Julia said, “Keep calm because if you go crazy, you’ll mess up.”
This past summer, Zayas was asked to participate in a special musical theater master class with Broadway’s Carrie St. Louis (Wicked, Rock of Ages). She performed a beautiful rendition of “Ring of Keys,” from the musical Fun Home to rave reviews from Miss St. Louis.
Throughout her time at LAMusArt, Julia has engaged in piano and voice lessons, modern dance and ballet, drama, and the tuition-free Choir, where she consistently performs solos. In the near future, Julia would love to take more dance classes at LAMusArt, but her long-term goals are much greater.
“I want to work on Broadway,” Zayas says. We have no doubt you will, Julia!
