Fifteen-year-old Sophia C. has been part of the LAMusArt family since September 2023. In a written interview, she shared that she first joined at 14, starting with beginning violin after her mom heard about the program from a friend. Since then, she has expanded her musical skills, taking violin, mariachi, and advanced choir. At her high school, she continues to develop her love for music by taking violin, guitar, and "glee" class.
When asked about her favorite class, Sophia said she has enjoyed everything she’s taken at LAMusArt but has a special appreciation for what she’s learned along the way. One of the biggest influences on her musical journey has been her teacher, Ms. Rubi Castillo. “She taught me the importance of learning an instrument,” she wrote.
Reflecting on her time at LAMusArt so far, Sophia shared that her favorite memory was her first performance.
“It’s special to me because that’s when my journey with music started,” she explained. That moment sparked her dedication to music, and she’s especially proud of taking on such a challenging instrument as the violin.
Outside of music, Sophia has plenty of interests. She enjoys reading, writing, roller skating, and spending time with friends. She also shared why she believes music and art are so important: “They shape the world visually and audibly.” The arts is a family affair; Sophia’s sister is also a student at LAMusArt, partaking in weekly drama classes.
Being part of LAMusArt has had a big impact on Sophia, helping her become “more musically driven” and strengthening her artistic skills. As for the future, she has a few career paths in mind—she’s considering becoming a mariachi musician, a funeral director, or a veterinarian. No matter what she chooses, she believes her time at LAMusArt will make her more well-rounded and help build her resume.
If a friend were to ask why they should join LAMusArt, Sophia’s answer is simple: “For the community, the great music, and the experience.”
And when asked if there was anything else she wanted to share, she kept it short and sweet: “I love mariachi.”
