Student Spotlight: Dezmond L.

Dezmond L., 10, joined LAMusArt when he was nine years old, first enrolling in Choir and Trumpet. “I first enrolled at LAMusArt when I was 9 years old. I attended Choir and Trumpet class,” he shares. His family’s connection to the LAMusArt reflects the school’s own connection to the East LA community: “We found LAMusArt because my dad lived nearby when he was a kid.”

Today, the arts are a shared family experience. “My sister Zoey attends classes at LAMusArt for singing lessons,” he says, adding that “my brother Vincent attended class for Guitar lessons.”

Because Dezmond is homeschooled, LAMusArt plays a central role in his artistic education. “I do not take any art or music classes at school because I am homeschooled,” he explains. Over time, he has explored a wide range of disciplines. “I have taken Choir, Trumpet, Dance, Violin, and Piano.”

Two teachers have had a strong influence on Dezmond’s growth as a musician. “My favorite teachers are Ms. Nadia Aponte, my piano teacher, and Ms. Rubi Castillo, my violin teacher,” he says. The lesson that has stayed with him most is a fundamental one known to instrumentalists: “The most important thing that they have taught me is that I need to practice at home if I want to be a better instrument player.”

One of Dezmond’s most meaningful memories at LAMusArt comes from performing for his loved ones, as he says, “My favorite memory is playing in the piano recital for Christmas because my family was there to support me and hear me play the piano.”

Outside of music and dance, Dezmond enjoys staying active. “Outside of the arts, I like attending my junior golf lessons,” he says. He believes the arts play an important role in helping students grow. “I think the arts are important to expose students to new instruments and learn new things.” Reflecting on his own experience, he adds, “My experience at LAMusArt has changed me by allowing me to learn different things while growing my musical ability.”

When he’s not practicing, Dezmond enjoys “playing video games and watching movies with my family,” always surrounded by the encouragement that fuels his love for the arts.

Looking toward the future, Dezmond already has big goals. “When I grow up, I want to be a piano teacher and a Mariachi in Mexico,” he says. “I like playing the piano and violin, and I will continue to take classes to grow in learning these instruments.” Above all, Dezmond is proud of the people who support him along the way. “I am most proud of my family. They take the time to take me to my classes as well as encourage and support me by attending my classes and recitals.”

For anyone thinking about joining LAMusArt, Dezmond keeps it simple. “You can enroll in different classes and have fun learning new things.”
